2Pac Friday

1 December 2023

On this 2Pac Friday, I am back in L.A.

It feels like time travel.

I used to come to L..A. often—and even lived here for a short stint.

But I haven’t been here since before Covid. And even the years approaching Covid did not bring me here with great frequency.

It feels like coming back to a different era of my life.

And even more so this time as I am out here for the 40th birthday of my best friend—since I was 6 years old.

You do the math, lol—because I am afraid to.

Oh, the older 2Pac Friday celebrators among 2Pac Friday Nation.

Yes, I have known my friend before I knew of 2Pac, not only because it was an age before I would walk uptown to buy CDs, but also it was before 2Pac himself was famous.

Yes, so much time has flown by.

Yet, here in this moment I time bending back. I experience the folding of time.

In these moments, it feels good.

Music is perhaps the ultimate form of time travel, not distinct or separate from these forms of returning to an old place, visiting an old friend, or celebrating a birthday.

That’s largely why we like music, why we like certain songs, is it not—because they take us back to a time in life.

“To Live & Die in L..A.” does that better than most songs, for it is not only a great song, but also a song about the constant of a place while things change with time.

So 2Pac Fridays certainly manipulate time as well.

For the greater good.

“To Live & Die in L.A.” is such an appropriate track for this 2Pac Friday, for this wonderul weekend I am so much looking forward to.

It will be a great weekend.

And any great weekend starts with a great 2Pac Friday.

Let the games begin.
