The Mount Rushmore
of
All-Time Great Pittsburgh Steelers Backup Quarterbacks
JOE GILLIAM: He was a very talented backup, who (in addition to this Mount Rushmore) appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated and won two rings as a member of Steel Curtain’s first two Super Bowl teams.
CHARLIE BATCH: He was the the idyllic story of the hometown kid done good. From Homestead, he returned home to Pittsburgh after a stint in Detroit and become the primary backup to Big Ben. Batch was beloved by Steelers fans and known for his community work.
RICK STROM: Like Batch, Strom was another example of the hometown kid making it locally. Born in Pittsburgh, Strom played high school ball at Fox Chapel. While he did not throw many passes in the NFL, his appearance in the Tecmo Super Bowl, one of the greatest videos games of all time, as Bubby Brister’s backup, earns him a spot on this Mount Rushmore—and immortality (as long as the internet exists, Rick Strom will exist here).
ANYBODY-BUT-MASON-RUDOLPH: Please don’t get me started, really! How many chances does a guy get? Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is a much superior bearer of the name and would be a more worthy member of this Mount Rushmore if the Steelers ever named him backup.
