2Pac Friday
11 August 2023
As my little sister is getting married tomorrow, it is only appropriate that this 2Pac Friday feature a love song. “Do for Love” seems like the most appropriate (not as though there necessarily exists a plethora of 2Pac love songs I would deem appropriate for my little sister’s wedding). She is marrying a great guy, so I am very happy for them both and happy to have this 2Pac song and SLP 2Pac Friday dedicated to them.
Besides the romantic focus of this song, it is great to see family and friends coming together and what people will “do for love” in each doing their part to make a low-budget wedding highly magical and beautiful.
The song was recorded in 1994 (but not released until 1998, after 2Pac’s death on his first posthumous double album, R U Still Down?) and has an older school element to it mixed with the optimistic side of 2Pac that probably reached its apex with Me Against the World, which was released in March of 1995.
“Do for Love” reached #21 on the United States charts, which is notable because 21 is the number of the great Roberto Clemente (who like 2Pac, died much too young), but did even better in the UK, reaching #12, which is notable because once again that is #21 flipped around if we are stretching for meaning, which we don’t mind doing here because, what the heck, it is 2Pac Friday and we can do what we want.
This track was initially titled “Sucka for Love” before being released, a line that is featured in the intro and honestly is a title I prefer.
But “Do for Love” will do just fine as a title and does more than fine on this lovely 2Pac Friday.
The animated music video is also pretty damn cool.
So, R U Still Down (for love)? On this, the most romantic of 2Pac Fridays, the answer is definitely, “Yes—”
I do (for love). “
